BOLD researcher Dr. Achilleas Psyllidis has teamed up with prominent researchers in the field of GIScience and Urban Analytics to develop the just-published commentary in Computational Urban Science titled "Points of Interest (POI): a commentary on the state of the art, challenges, and prospects for the future." (With Dr. Song Gao (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Dr. Yingjie Hu (University at Buffalo), Dr. Eun-Kyeong Kim (University of Zurich), Dr. Grant McKenzie (McGill University), Dr. Ross Purves (University of Zurich), Dr. May Yuan (University of Texas at Dallas), and Dr. Clio Andris (Georgia Institute of Technology). This commentary describes the current state of the art of POIs as digital, spatial datasets, both in terms of their quality and affordings, and how they are used across research domains. Challenges in POI geolocation and spatial representation, data fidelity and POI attributes are listed, and the researchers address how these challenges may affect the result of geospatial analyses of the built environment for applications in public health, urban planning, sustainable development, mobility, community studies and sociology.
