The Launch of the Feminist Generative AI Lab

On 19 and 20 November 2024, the Feminist Generative AI Lab was officially launched with the symposium “Feminist AI: Shaping Ethical Futures” and a PhD workshop on feminist approaches to generative AI. The events were hosted at Mondai | House of AI, located on the TU Delft Campus.

The symposium brought together international experts and participants to explore how feminist theories can reshape the AI industry. Discussions focused on key topics such as mitigating bias, fostering inclusion in AI design, and addressing the societal and environmental impacts of technology. A central theme was how feminist approaches can challenge traditional notions of neutrality and objectivity, making space for more diverse perspectives in AI development. The PhD workshop provided a hands-on platform for early-career researchers to explore feminist methodologies and their application to AI. Participants shared insights, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and new ideas to rethink the role of AI in society.

Inspiring collaboration
We are proud to highlight the involvement of dr. Francisca Grommé, Co-Director of the Feminist Generative AI Lab and a BOLD Cities Affiliate. Dr. Grommé is an Assistant Professor in Digitalisation in Work and Society at Erasmus University Rotterdam and an AIPact TopTalent Research Fellow. Her work focuses on how data and AI impact marginalized groups, governance structures, and social justice.

The launch of the Feminist Generative AI Lab is an important step towards rethinking how AI technologies are designed and governed. By embedding feminist principles into these processes, the lab aims to create systems that prioritize human and environmental well-being, challenging traditional power structures in the AI industry.

We look forward to seeing how the lab’s initiatives will shape the future of AI.
