On Wednesday, April 16th, the Dutch police force organizes a work conference focusing on the impact of virtualization of the public domain on safety, autonomy and democracy. Together with Pieter van Boheemen, (director of Post-X Society), our academic director Jiska Engelbert organizes the workshop ‘smart questions about a ‘smart’ living environment in our democracy and the rule of law. Through activities like these, BOLD aims to encourage the critical debate about the use of ‘smart’ devices and ‘smart’ data in the public domain.
Our goal is to create, together with the participants, a list of questions that each policymaker who works for the ‘smart’ city should ask themselves when facing new developments. ‘Smart’ devices in the public domain gather increasingly more personal data. But what impact does this leave long term? How do we prevent dystopian scenarios from becoming true? How do we safeguard our values from the long-term impact of the datafication of our living environment? Do (European) regulations succeed in offering proper protection? Together with the participants, Jiska explores these and other crucial questions.
